How to Meet Your Protein Needs on a GLP-1
GLP-1 medications like Wegovy, Zepbound, Mounjaro, and Ozempic can be incredibly effective tools for weight management. However, because these medications can significantly reduce appetite and portion sizes, it becomes even more important to make sure the food you are eating is meeting your nutritional needs.
One of the biggest priorities? Protein.

Why Is Protein Important on a GLP-1?
When you lose weight, your body doesn't necessarily lose only body fat. Some loss of lean muscle mass can occur as well, particularly if you aren't eating enough protein or incorporating resistance exercise.
Maintaining muscle is important for strength, mobility, metabolic health, and long-term weight management. This is why your goal while taking a GLP-1 shouldn't simply be to eat as little as possible.
Instead, the goal is to make the smaller amount of food you're eating nutritionally count.
Protein can also help with:
Maintaining lean muscle mass during weight loss
Supporting recovery from exercise
Improving fullness and satisfaction from meals
Supporting healthy hair, skin, and nails
Meeting your body's overall nutritional needs while calories are reduced
How Much Protein Do You Need on a GLP-1?
There isn't one protein goal that works for everyone.
Your individual needs depend on factors such as your body size, age, activity level, medical history, weight-loss goals, and overall calorie intake.
For many adults losing weight, a reasonable starting point may be around 1.0–1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, although some people may benefit from more depending on their individual needs.
For example, someone who weighs 180 pounds (about 82 kg) may have a starting protein goal around 82–98 grams per day.
However, this doesn't mean everyone taking a GLP-1 should automatically aim for that amount. A Registered Dietitian can help determine an appropriate protein target based on your individual needs.
Prioritize Protein at Meals
One of the easiest ways to meet your protein needs on a GLP-1 is to make protein the foundation of your meals.
Because your appetite may be much smaller than it was before starting medication, you may not always be able to finish everything on your plate. Eating your protein source first can help ensure you get the most nutritionally important part of your meal before you become full.
Try building meals around foods such as:
Chicken, turkey, fish, or lean beef
Eggs or egg whites
Greek yogurt
Cottage cheese
Cheese
Tofu, tempeh, or edamame
Beans and lentils
High-protein milk
Protein shakes or powders when needed
You don't have to eliminate carbohydrates or vegetables to prioritize protein. Instead, think of protein as the anchor of the meal, with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats rounding it out.
Spread Protein Throughout the Day
Trying to eat 80–100+ grams of protein at dinner isn't realistic—especially when you're taking a medication that reduces your appetite.
Instead, spread your protein throughout the day.
For example:
Breakfast: 20–30 grams
Lunch: 20–30 grams
Snack: 10–20 grams
Dinner: 20–30 grams
Breaking your goal into smaller amounts can make protein much easier to tolerate and help you consistently meet your needs.
What If You Aren't Hungry?
Low appetite is one of the most common challenges I see with people taking GLP-1 medications.
It can be tempting to simply skip meals when you aren't hungry, but regularly eating extremely small amounts can make it difficult to meet your protein, vitamin, mineral, fiber, and overall energy needs.
Instead of forcing yourself to eat a large meal, try smaller, protein-rich meals and snacks throughout the day.
Some easy options include:
Greek yogurt
Cottage cheese and fruit
Hard-boiled eggs
String cheese
Deli turkey roll-ups
Tuna packets
Edamame
A small protein smoothie
High-protein milk
A protein shake
Liquid or softer protein sources can sometimes be particularly helpful on days when your appetite is very low.
Do You Need Protein Shakes on a GLP-1?
Not necessarily.
Whenever possible, I like to see people get the majority of their nutrition from actual meals and snacks. Whole foods provide much more than protein—they also provide vitamins, minerals, fiber, healthy fats, and other nutrients your body needs.
However, protein shakes can be an extremely useful tool when your appetite is low or your schedule makes it difficult to eat enough.
Think of protein shakes as a supplement to your diet rather than a replacement for your entire diet.
Don't Forget Strength Training
Protein and resistance exercise work together when it comes to maintaining muscle during weight loss.
If your healthcare provider has cleared you for exercise, incorporating resistance training a few times per week can help preserve strength and lean body mass while losing weight.
This doesn't necessarily mean spending hours in the gym. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, Pilates, dumbbells, or traditional strength training can all be useful depending on your fitness level.
Eating Less Isn't Always Better
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding GLP-1 medications is that the less you eat, the better the medication is working.
That's not the goal.
GLP-1 medications can make it easier to eat appropriate portions and manage hunger, but your body still needs adequate nutrition.
If you're consistently struggling to eat enough protein, skipping meals, feeling weak or fatigued, or unsure whether you're meeting your nutritional needs, it may be time to work with a Registered Dietitian who understands GLP-1 medications.
The goal isn't just weight loss.
It's losing weight while supporting your muscle, nutrition, energy, and long-term health.
